Overview of CAN and CAN FD technology

The Controller Area Network (CAN) was originally developed as a robust communication technology for use in automobiles. These are its main advantages:

  • Only one line/cable is required to network all communication participants.
  • CRC and error detection provide a high level of data security.
  • Simple implementation of a multi-master system guarantees redundancy.
  • Non-destructive bus arbitration guarantees shortest response times and thus real-time behavior.
  • Priority-controlled bus access allows the user to distribute priorities.
  • Extensive error handling supports the operational reliability of the network.

The following overview shows how and where we use CAN in products and with customers.

CAN and CAN FD Interfaces

Due to its high data security, the CAN bus has also established itself outside of automotive applications and has long been used in industrial automation as well as in safety-relevant areas.

CAN Error Injection

CAN is also being used with increasing frequency in safety-critical areas such as medical technology or aerospace. This results in increased safety requirements and the need for verification, simulation and testing. CAN fault injection can help with this.

esd Advanced CAN Controller (esdACC)

Most CAN controllers available today are connected to the host system via eight or sixteen bit wide buses. The write access and especially the read access to these controllers is very slow compared to the cycle time of modern CPUs.

CAN 402 Series - Interfaces for all Cases

The CAN 402 series is a CAN board family developed for the PCIexpress and PCI bus. The CAN 402 series has variants with up to four galvanically isolated CAN or CAN-FD interfaces according to ISO 11898-2 and is implemented with the esdACC (esd Advanced CAN Core) certified according to ISO 16845:2004.
